The story of Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas, is a rich tradition primarily celebrated in the Netherlands and parts of Belgium. Sinterklaas is said to be the inspira  and kindness. He became the patron saint of children, sailors, and many others. His feast day is celebrated on December 6th, and the traditions associated with Sinterklaas are deeply rooted in European folklore. According to the legend, Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands from Spain on a steamboat with his helpers, the Pieten (or "Zwarte Pieten," traditionally portrayed in blackface, which has become a controversial and evolving aspect of the tradition). He rides a white horse named Amerigo and travels across the rooftops to deliver gifts to children. The celebrations typically begin in mid-November with the arrival of Sinterklaas, and culminate on the evening of December 5th, known as "Sinterklaasavond" or "Pakjesavond" (Gift Evening).
